Aeronautical broadband on the rise in South America

Aeronautical broadband usage over Latin America is set to increase after recent deals aimed at expanding capacity and range of services in the region.

This week NewCom International Teleport in Peru was contracted to provide teleport services by Panasonic Avionics Corp., a leading supplier of in-flight entertainment and communication systems.

Panasonic Avionics said it selected NewCom International's brand new state of the art teleport in Peru to be the facility of excellence and manage their aeronautical broadband coverage in South America.

The decision follows Panasonic's decision to expand its aeronautical broadband service over Latin America, seen by industry analysts as a key development toward enhancing secure high-speed aeronautical communication in the region.

Brazil will host the FIFA World Cup next year and the Summer Olympics in 2016 and is preparing for anticipated increase in air traffic over the next few years. The tournaments will be among a series of high-profile regional events, including several defense and security fairs and conferences in Brazil, Chile and other countries.

NewCom International will provide the services out of their "cutting edge teleport and providing reliable coverage thereby enhancing the in-flight entertainment experience," the company said.

NewCom International has a new facility in Lima. Due to its low annual precipitation the Peruvian capital provides excellent satellite coverage to the entire region, industry experts say.

David Bruner, vice president, global communications service for Panasonic Avionics Corp., noted the recent expansion of air services in Latin America.

"As we expand our customer base and add more airlines that are located in this rapidly expanding region or fly missions over this area of the world, we will continue to ensure our ability to deliver the highest bandwidth for the lowest possible cost," he said.

"The first rate teleport in Lima was key to accomplishing this important business objective," Bruner added.

Panasonic Avionics Corp., a subsidiary of Panasonic Corp. of North America, has headquarters in Lake Forest, Calif.. The avionics and telecoms provider has more than 2,600 employees and operations in 50 locations worldwide.

In September Panasonic Avionics announced an agreement with Intelsat S.A. for capacity on the high performance Intelsat EpicNG platform.

Panasonic said it selected the Intelsat 33e satellite to provide coverage and capacity for its global communications services in response to expanding air travel networks.
