AREVA Launches Pre-Licensing Nuclear Power Planet Process In UK

AREVA has applied to the UK Regulators for its EPR nuclear reactor design to be considered for the forthcoming Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process. The application is accompanied by letters of support from British Energy, EDF, E.ON UK, Iberdrola, RWE npower and SUEZ, all who consider EPR to be a potential design for new build nuclear in UK. Other major utilities have also expressed serious interest in the EPR.

With the OL3 project in Finland, EPR is the only third-generation reactor currently under construction. Another EPR is being built in France with EDF and the EPR licensing process is well underway in the USA. EPR is state-of-the-art nuclear technology, it features an extended life of 60 years, greater availability, easier maintainability and is fully compliant with the most demanding safety standards, including being resistant to airplane crash.

Should AREVA's application be accepted, then it is intended that the three year GDA project will be jointly managed with EDF, the world largest nuclear plant operator. This joint approach brings together the combined strengths of a vendor, and a potential licensee.

In parallel with the GDA project, AREVA will manage an Alliance of all those major utilities that support the EPR design and are considering EPR for new build in UK. The Alliance objective is to support these utilities to achieve EPR "intelligent licensee" status, in preparation for subsequent site license application.

First Russian Built Nuclear Power Reactor In China Goes Into Operation

Russia's first nuclear reactor in China has finally gone into commercial operation after numerous delays and a second will begin production by year's end, Russian officials said Tuesday. "The Tianwan nuclear power plant is a very big Russian-Chinese project," Ivan Kamenskikh, vice head of the Federal Atomic Energy Agency of Russia, told journalists via video phone from Moscow.
