China's auto output is expected to top 10 million units for the first time ever this year, an official told a briefing in Beijing on Monday.

"There's no doubt our auto production in 2008 will exceed 10 million units, with sedan output to surpass five million," said Zhu Hongren, a senior official of the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planner.

Last year, major auto makers in the country produced 9.04 million cars, up 22.9 percent on 2006.

Of this amount, 4.95 million were sedans, up 25 percent from a year earlier, he said, citing figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.
