Tokyo (AFP) June 12, 2007 Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it had developed a next-generation engine valve mechanism that can improve the fuel efficiency of petrol-powered vehicles by about five to 10 percent. The new system also reduces carbon dioxide emissions, boosts engine output by at least 10 percent and enhances acceleration responsiveness, the Japanese auto giant said in a statement. It said it plans to introduce the new system, called "Valvematic", in the near future, starting with a new vehicle model with a 2.0-litre engine. The system adjusts the volume of air taken in by continuously controlling the intake valve lift volume and the timing of the valve's opening and closing, the automaker said. Toyota, which overtook struggling US rival General Motors in the first quarter of 2007 to become the world's top-selling automaker, aims to completely revamp its gasoline engine and transmission lineup by 2010 to reduce emissions.

The very day after the shareholders meeting in Wilmington, Delaware, however, Wagoner was in Washington along with top executives from the Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp., arguing GM and other automakers could meet the tougher new fuel economy standards pending in Congress. |
