France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications (FTMSC) and Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Company have signed an agreement for FTMSC to provide Thuraya's mobile satellite services in Algeria.

Through a sales office in Algiers and its network of Algeria-based resellers, FTMSC will distribute Thuraya's voice and data communications solutions aimed at customers in urban centers and remote areas beyond terrestrial telecoms networks.

FTMSC, which markets and distributes its mobile satcoms offering to customers all over the world, has held a distribution license in Algeria since June 2004. It serves Algeria-based customers belonging primarily to the oil and gas, mining, media, tourism and maritime sectors as well as government institutions.

FTMSC will distribute a range of Thuraya solutions including Thuraya DSL, a notebook-sized terminal enabling data connection at speeds of up to 144 Kbit/s, ThurayaMarine, a hand-held device for voice and data communications at sea, and PCO (Public Calling Office) for entrepreneurs wishing to set up a public telephone

Mr. Kamel Darmouli, Managing Director of FTMSC in Algeria stated: "We are delighted to offer Thuraya's mobile satcoms services in Algeria and are convinced of the strong potential for these high-quality solutions on such a market".

On his part, Thuraya's CEO Mr. Yousuf Al Sayed, said the agreement would further strengthen Thuraya's long-standing partnership with FTMSC in the mobile satellite arena in one of our key African markets. "Our partnership with FTMSC in Algeria signifies continued focus on and commitment to this major market, where Thuraya's advanced satellite voice and data offerings, combined with FTMSC's long experience in customer service, will be a great value to customers," he elaborated.
