China reports more than 81,000 road deaths last year

by Staff Writers
Beijing (AFP) March 16, 2008
More than 81,000 people died on China's roads last year, an average of around 223 a day, state-run press said Sunday.

The 81,649 deaths was down from 89,000 in 2006 but still meant there were more fatalities on China's roads last year than anywhere else in the world, Xinhua news agency said, citing the China Automotive Technology Research Centre.

"The government should attach greater efforts to publicising the importance of road safety and improving people's safety consciousness," the centre's director, Zhao Hang, was quoted as saying.
