British Broadcasting Group BSkyB Hits Subscriber Target


London (AFP) Dec 19, 2005
 British satellite broadcaster BSkyB announced on Monday that it had passed its long-standing goal of eight million subscribers.

BSkyB, the biggest satellite broadcaster in Europe, aims to reach 10 million direct-to-home subscribers by 2010, with 25 percent watching via Sky Plus, which allows customers to pause live television and record one satellite programme while viewing another.

"Sky is achieving strong growth," chief executive James Murdoch said in an official statement accompanying the news.

"Nearly one in three homes and counting have chosen Sky and we are especially well placed to broaden Sky's appeal as entertainment and communications come together."

BSkyB also announced that its 211-million-pound (311-million-euro, 375-million-dollar) cash takeover of telecoms firm Easynet, announced in October, has been declared unconditional but will remain open until further notice.
